1. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers had a bye in week 11. Pittsburgh’s defense is solid and is getting better, ranked in the top five in both passing and rushing defense. The Steelers play the Chiefs this week, so make sure they are in your starting lineup. Projected fantasy points: 25.1.
2. Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys defense is second on the list after forcing two turnovers in the overtime win against the Redskins. The Cowboys play Miami at home this Sunday. In its past three home games, Dallas’ defense has given up a combined 27 points. Projected fantasy points: 20.6.
3. Houston Texans: Houston is second in the league in points allowed per game at 16.6. Its defense has been so good that none of its last four wins have been close. On top of all that, the Texans play the offensively challenged Jaguars this week. Projected fantasy points: 19.5.
4. St. Louis Rams: The Rams defense isn’t that good overall, allowing over 24 points per game. However, they are surprisingly good at defending the pass, ranked ninth in opposing passing yards. Luckily, their opponents on Sunday, the Cardinals, are primarily a passing team thanks to injuries. Projected fantasy points: 18.0.
5. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons are coming off a good defensive performance against the Titans on Sunday, holding them to 17 points. This week Atlanta plays Minnesota, which will be without Adrian Peterson. The Vikings won’t be able to do much of anything without their superstar back. Projected fantasy points: 17.3.
Not top 5, but could be: This week’s defense that missed the cut is that of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals defense has been the main reason for the team’s success this year. This week they play the Browns at home. Cleveland isn’t a real offensive threat, so I’m expecting a good fantasy day for the Bengals D. Projected fantasy points: 17.0.
