South Bracket Preview
What to Watch For: If there's one region that has the most potential to screw up everyone's bracket, it's the East region. The top seeds - Villanova and Virginia - both have tough matchups in the Round of 32. Louisville at No. 4 was a bit surprising to many. No. 5 Northern Iowa's opening round matchup against Wyoming won't be a walk in the park, especially with Larry Nance Jr. ready to make some noise in the tournament.
And let's not forget No. 6 Providence, who can easily play deep in the tournament if forward LaDontae Henton and guard Kris Dunn are firing on all cylinders. Providence has a 57 percent chance of advancing to the Round of 32, a 23 percent chance of advancing to the Sweet 16, and an 8 percent chance of making it to the Elite 8. The numbers may not necessarily be in their favor, but don't tell Henton that.
Potential Sleeper: Outside of the top seeds, the only other team with the potential to make it all the way to the Final Four is No. 6 Providence. They have consistency in Denton, but Dunn provides the x-factor that ended up making a star out of Shabazz Napier. He averaged 15.8 points, 7.6 assists, 5.8 boards and 2.8 steals in the regular season.
Potential 1st Round Upsets: Northern Iowa should be absolutely afraid of their matchup with No. 12 Wyoming. Wyoming can throw Nance Jr. at Seth Tuttle to nullify any advantage UNI may have. If Nance hadn't been out a couple games due to illness, Wyoming actually would have been ranked higher, not something Northern Iowa fans want to hear.
AccuScore gives Northern Iowa a 75 percent chance of advancing to the Round of 32, and about a 25 percent chance to Wyoming.
Players to Watch: Keep an eye on the Big 12 Player of the Year - Oklahoma's Buddy Hield. Not only is he active defensively, but he's now transformed into one of the better scorers and shooters in the entire region.
While Denton gets much of the national spotlight on behalf of Providence, don't sleep on point guard Kris Dunn, whose size and athleticism will make him a force in the tournament.
At 6'11", Wyoming's Larry Nance Jr. doesn't easily get ignored. More than his length and size, keep an eye on his footwork. Most fans aren't used to such a talent at a program like Wyoming’s.
