Final Four: Kentucky Still Clear Favorite
On Saturday, April 4, 2015, college basketball’s Final Four will meet to decide which two teams will play in Monday’s national championship game. With three no. 1 teams and no. 7 Michigan State, it’s easy to understand AccuScore’s calculations.
The Kentucky Wildcats have consistently been the favorites to win the tournament, and even though they face another no. 1 seed, Kentucky is the most talented team in the tournament. Kentucky has a 56.3% chance of advancing to the final and a 37.3% chance of cutting down the nets after Monday’s National Championship. What this means is that regardless of who Kentucky meets in the final, the Wildcats would walk in as favorites.
While Kentucky has the best odds of winning the title game, Duke is the most likely of the four teams to get there. The Blue Devils have a 58.2% chance of getting to the final and a 25.8% chance of winning the title.
The main reason Duke has the best odds to make the final is because Michigan State is considered the weakest of the four teams still alive. The Spartans would enter the final as an underdog regardless of whether Wisconsin or Kentucky makes it through, so Michigan State only has a 13.2% chance of winning the title. Duke is nearly twice as likely to win the title, and Kentucky is nearly three times as likely.
