East Region: NCAA Tournament Preview
What to Watch For: The biggest question in the South region is whether or not there's a team in the field that can defeat either No. 1 Duke or No. 2 Gonzaga. Gonzaga once again enters the big dance coming off a solid regular season. Gonzaga lost in the Round of 32 in 2013 as the No. 1 overall seed. Can they finally produce in the postseason?
Gonzaga has about a 92 percent chance of advancing past the first round, a 69 percent chance of advancing to the Sweet 16, a 46 percent chance of reaching the Elite 8 and about a 24 percent chance of getting to the Final Four. Duke's respective percentages are 98, 83, 57 and 36.
Potential Sleeper: No. 5 Utah has everything needed to make a deep run in the tournament. First and foremost, they have size and they have it in the paint. They focus on defense first and having enough shooters on the other end to keep every matchup competitive. Keep an eye on Delon Wright who enters the big dance averaging 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 57 percent from the field and 59 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Potential 1st Round Upsets: Can Duke really be upset in the second round? AccuScore assigns Duke a 83 percent chance of advancing past the Round of 32, and 12 percent to San Diego State. The Aztecs are one of the best in the nation on the defensive end, doubling on bigs and running out to shooters remarkably well. They'll be able to stay competitive with their defense alone, but scoring enough on the other end of the floor will be the No. 1 challenge. It won't be a popular pick, but the matchup also couldn’t be more appealing for SD State.
Fear Factor: For whatever reason, Georgetown has struggled against double digit seeds. Get this, Georgetown's last five NCAA tournament losses have come to No. 14 Ohio, No. 10 Davidson, No. 11 VCU, No. 11 N.C. State and No. 15 Florida-Gulf Coast. Georgetown tips off this year’s tournament against No. 13 Eastern Washington. East Washington not only recorded a win against Indiana this season, but also boast the nation's leading scorer in Tyler Harvey. AccuScore gives Eastern Washington about a 32 percent chance of advancing to the Round of 32.
