Must See Matches Week of 21th April, 2012
Arseanal v Chelsea - English Premier League
Arsenal are the home side and face a weary Chelsea team that has one eye on the 2nd leg of the Champions League semi-final versus Barcelona. This London derby usually bears fruit, and is of the utmost importance to a 4th place finish. Chelsea will likely start Fernando Torres and save Didier Drogba for the Champions League match on Tuesday. However, this is not a throw away match. Chelsea are currently 2 points back of 4th place, and thus 2 points out of next season’s final Champions League spot. Arsenal will be without Mikel Arteta, but the Gunners welcome Lorent Koscielny back into the fold.
Real Madrid vs Barcelona - Spanish Primera Liga
Both teams have meaningful midweek matches coming up, but this is the biggest match in Spain. Even if we don’t see an El Clasico Champions League Final (I still think it’ll happen), we get to see the two most talented sides in the world go at it for 90 meaningful minutes. Barcelona are 4 points back, so a win at the Camp Nou for the home side would make the title race a 1 point affair. With Madrid playing Sevilla and away to Athletic Bilbao in their last 4 matches, a single draw could cost Jose Mourinho’s men the trophy they thought they had already secured. As a reminder, these are the two best teams with regards to talent, coaching, and depth. Watch this match.
Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Monchengladbach - German Bundesliga
Dortmund will claim it’s 2nd consecutive Bundesliga title, but that doesn’t mean Jurgen Klopp’s men will stop playing. Dortmund are at home and Monchengladbach are only 1 point back of Schalke. With Champions League guaranteed for both teams, Gladbach will be playing for a chance to move out of the Champions League playoff spot and into the group stage spot. Also, this will be the last time Marco Reus faces Borussia Dortmund as an opponent. These are two of the best teams in Germany.
Juventus v Roma - Italian Serie A
Juventus has a slender 1 point lead over AC Milan with 6 matches remaining. With 3 of their last 6 matches coming against the bottom 3 in Italy, this looks to be Juve’s toughest match. If Juve cannot collect 3 points, Milan will expect to go forward and claim another title. However, Juve have not lost a match this season, so even if Juve don’t win, they probably won’t lose. Roma are 4 points back of the final Champions League position in Italy, so the Romans have plenty to play for. The pressure is on, and every match for the remainder of the season is a title match for the team from Turin.
