1. New York Giants: The Giants defense is not at the top of this list because of how dominant it has been this year. They are ranked in the middle of the pack when it comes to opponent yards rushing and passing. The important thing this week is that they are facing a bad offense in the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks average just over 250 total yards per game, so expect the giants to hold them to around 16 points. Projected fantasy points: 19.9.
2. Detroit Lions: The reason the Lions are 4-0 is not because of a stifling defense. They have an ok defense that has done enough to win games. This weekend they are facing a team that has a struggling offensive line, the Chicago Bears. The Lions should be able to put plenty of pressure on the quarterback, thanks to Ndamukong Suh in particular, which will disrupt the offense and lead to turnovers. Projected fantasy points: 18.0.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Today is a strange week for defenses, as the team that gave up 89 points in the first two games in third on this list. Again, the Chiefs position on this list has more to do with the offense they are going up against. The Colts are ranked near the bottom in both passing and rushing yards. I don’t expect Indianapolis to score more than twenty in this game. Projected fantasy points: 17.2.
4. Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals have a better defense than teams ranked higher on this list but take the fourth spot. The Cincinnati defense has given up the least amount yards this season and should be successful against a Jacksonville team that relies almost primarily on running the ball. Projected fantasy points: 16.0.
5. Minnesota Vikings: The winless Vikings don’t do a lot of things well, but one of them is stopping the run. Minnesota is the fifth best rushing defense in the league, which will be invaluable against Arizona running back Beanie Wells. The Vikings are projected to hold the Cardinals to a little under 20 points and to force a couple of turnovers. Projected fantasy points: 15.9.
Not top 5, but could be: This week’s defense/special teams that didn’t make the list but could put up big numbers is that of Jacksonville. The Jaguars defense is decent and has done a good job of keeping dangerous offenses, like the Saints, from running up the score. Their opponents on Sunday are the Bengals. Cincinnati is not a great offensive team and has only scored more than 20 points once. I expect Jacksonville to have a good day defensively. Projected fantasy points: 12.8.
