1. Baltimore Ravens: The intimidating Baltimore defense takes the top spot this week. The Ravens give up the fewest points per game in the league at 14.2 and allow less than 300 yards per game. This week the Ravens play the Jaguars, who are a bad offensive team that barely average 250 yards per game on offense. Projected fantasy points: 25.0.
2. Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys are second on the list after an impressive defensive performance in week six against a great Patriots offense. Dallas put pressure on Tom Brady and forced New England into four turnovers. This week the Cowboys play the St. Louis Rams, who are a weak offensive team. Expect the Cowboys defense to have a solid day. Projected fantasy points: 20.9.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers defense has struggled somewhat this year but sits at fourth in points allowed per game at 17.0. Like the Cowboys, the Steelers played well in week six and are facing a mediocre offense in week seven in the Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers may not force a lot of turnovers, but they’ll hold the Cardinals to under 20 points.
4. Denver Broncos: It’s a little surprising to see the Broncos on this list when they allow 28 points per game, which is second worst in the league. What makes the Denver defense a solid choice this week is its opponent, the Miami Dolphins. Miami averages only 15 points per game and is terrible in the red zone. This is a battle between a bad defense and a bad offense but expect the bad defense to win out in this matchup. Projected fantasy points: 17.0.
5. New Orleans Saints: The Saints defense is in a similar situation to the Broncos. The Saints are not a good defensive team, giving up 25.2 points per game. Luckily for them they are playing the Indianapolis Colts this week. The Colts have struggled to score points without Peyton Manning, and I don’t expect that to change in New Orleans. Projected fantasy points: 14.7.
Not top 5, but could be: This week’s defense that missed the cut but is in position to have a solid week is that of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are bad at defending the pass but great at stopping the run. They rank 5th in the league in opponent rushing yards, allowing only 84 yards per game. Green Bay’s opponents in week seven are the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings strength on offense, running the ball, is the Packers strength on defense. If the Packers can stop Adrian Peterson, they’ll rack up fantasy points this week. Projected fantasy points: 14.1.
