Texas Longhorns 2011 Season Preview Texas Longhorns 2011 Season Preview The Texas Longhorns It is almost impossible to be a top-5 team every year, but the 2010 Texas Longhorns sunk to lows that they should never see. Despite losing Jordan Shipley and Colt McCoy, the Longhorns were supposed to just reload with new quarterback Garrett Gilbert and a host of other five star players. How else do you explain going 5- when you boast a roster of 65 recruits that were rated four stars or higher? Beyond the nightmare of last year, Texas has some serious questions to answer including their quarterback situation, two new coordinators and a non-conference schedule that is not as easy as they are used. News out of Austin is Garrett Gilbert might be another Chris Simms, which means he is a flop. While Mack Brown hitched his star to Simms in the early part of last decade, he might have to pay attention to incoming freshman, Case McCoy. If the name sounds familiar, it should, Case is the younger brother to UT legend, Colt McCoy. While Case showed great command of the offense during the spring game, it is a stretch to think he can come in and immediately make a difference simply because he is a “McCoy.” Even his brother Colt took a few years before hitting his stride in Austin. No matter how you spin it, the loss of Will Muschamp his a huge loss for Texas. You just don’t go out and replace one of the best mind’s in college football and say everything is going to be ok. Last year, Texas players had trouble making adjustment and lost to teams with bland offenses and inferior talent. Bringing in Manny Diaz from Mississippi State does not convince me that everything is just going to work itself out. There will be growing pains. Big XII Title Hopes Even at +500, the Longhorn odds of winning the Big XII is a call for all suckers to report to the betting window. While the Big XII is not a tough conference, it’s a bit of a challenge when looking at it through the eyes of Texas. Texas hosts Oklahoma State again, who racked up 308 yards in the first half last year when they won 33-16 in Austin. Additionally, Texas will have their annual Red River Rivalry game in Dallas with Oklahoma, and travel to College Station on Thanksgiving to play upstart, Texas A&M. The rest of the schedule should bring wins for Texas if they can play to their potential, which is a big “if” after what we saw last year. Worth a BCS Future? Vince Young isn’t walking through that door and the 25-to-1 odds Vegas is offering is laughable. Texas should be +10,000 and even then, I would still pass. Texas A&M beat Texas last year, has an easier schedule than UT and plays them at home, yet Vegas considers the Aggies to be a bigger longshot than Texas. If you are considering making this bet, also throw some money down on Ohio State, Boise State, Mike Tyson to beat Buster Douglas, etc, etc. Click Here for the Summer Specials with a Free 7 Day Trial!
