The Yankees made a deal to acquire a star player and then another star of their own. After acquiring Ichiro just days ago, Alex Rodriguez suffered a broken hand Tuesday night and could miss up to eight weeks. That would put the third baseman out until sometime in September, and scrambling to be ready by the postseason.
For the regular season however this injury should not negatively impact New York very much. The Yankees are clearly one of the best teams in baseball, and look like a virtual lock to make the postseason. The Yankees drop only by 0.3 wins without A-Rod in the lineup, and are still 98.9 percent likely to make the playoffs via either an AL East title of one of the 2 Wild Cards.
There are reports that the Yankees are pursuing San Diego third baseman Chase Headley to fill the void created by this injury. Right now the team will fill in with Ramiro Peña and Jayson Nix, and also by playing Eric Chavez in the field some. The Yankees will be fine if a trade is made or not.
