AFC South: 2015 Division Previews

Don’t know about AccuScore’s NFL picks? Learn about why AccuScore has the best NFL picks

Not much has changed in the AFC South since Andrew Luck entered the league. It's now his 4th year in the NFL and the Texans, Titans and Jaguars continue to chase Indianapolis. For Luck and the Colts, it's now time to set their sights on the Super Bowl.

The Colts - led by Luck - have taken a step forward in each of their last three seasons. With a more balanced team now, Indy is looking for its third Super Bowl trip in a decade. The Colts were dominated 45-7 in last season's AFC Championship game.

What exactly has changed since then? Luck finally has some much-needed help. The Colts added wide receiver Andre Johnson and running back Frank Gore in the offseason.

Weak division or not, the fact of the matter is that Indianapolis just doesn't have much competition. The Texans continue to rely on a J.J. Watt-led defense that scores about as often as anyone could hope, realistically; the Jaguars and Titans look to take strides with their QBs (Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariota) but need two-to-three years before showing any signs of progress.

Does Indy finally have the right pieces?

The Colts have had one main point of criticism over the past few seasons: quality of talent outside the QB position. Following last year's loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game, the Colts added two weapons in Johnson and Gore that they hope will reverse the outcome if the two sides were to meet once again this season.

Johnson's height is a big-time asset, and his ability to cut across the middle of the field - especially on third downs - is crucial. Gore, if healthy and used properly, could ultimately make Luck even more of a threat on the offensive end.

J.J. Watt & the Houston Texans

J.J. Watt finished last season with 20.5 sacks, 10 deflected passes and 47 QB hurries - absolute domination. Despite his own individual success, however, the Houston Texans continue to put out products with obvious holes onto the field. Without a leader on the offensive end, a real franchise QB, the Texans will continue to struggle despite Watt's heroics.

This season will be an interesting one, as a career backup in Brian Hoyer will try to lead a team of ageing talent. Can Arian Foster return to his former self? Way too many questions than answers at this point for a franchise that’s expected to feature well-balanced rosters.
