After a big weekend of basketball Syracuse is the new number one team in the land, at least according to the rankings. That is because Ohio State lost to Kansas and Kentucky lost to Indiana. Both teams were on the road, and were moved down a peg by default.
If I were a voter I would have kept the Buckeyes in the top spot because the game was on the road and Jared Sullinger sat out due to back spasms. They looked very good in a tough environment despite playing without a first-team All-American. Kentucky was also on the road and got nothing from Terrence Jones, and still only lost because of one of the best buzzer beaters in a few seasons. I view both the Wildcats and Buckeyes as better right now than the Orange.
What the weekend also showed was that Indiana is back as an elite player in the Big Ten, and across the country. The win over Kentucky showed recruits and fans that Tom Crean has rebuilt the program the right way. Cody Zeller looks like a better pro prospect than his brother Tyler at North Carolina, and Christian Watford is a match-up nightmare on the college level.
Tonight has a very short schedule with only three basketball games with lines I have no official picks to share. Come back tomorrow for more picks and more analysis of college hoops.
