Kontinental Hockey League is the first major ice hockey league to have completed the regular season and heading for playoffs. Divided into two conferences, east and west, altogether sixteen teams have made it to the post-season - eight in each conference.

This time the regular season did not offer a lot of surprises and we can find the usual suspects on top of the standings once again. As an exception, newcomers from China, Red Star Kunlun made it into the playoffs in their first season, which is a remarkable feat. It was Sibir Novosibirsk who had to make way for resurgent Kunlun and it was a disappointing season all in all for the Siberians. In the west, HC Sochi crashed out of the playoffs and their Cinderella story came to an abrupt end. Otherwise the regular season was very much as expected, with SKA and CSKA dominating the West and Magnitogorsk, Avangard Omsk and Ak Bars Kazan ruling in the east. Playoffs are a different story though and anything can happen in the best of seven series!
