Last night, the surprise first place Florida Panthers got absolutely trounced by the New York Rangers. The Rangers, at home, scored all six of their goals in the first two periods, and walked away with an easy 6-1 win. A loss like this makes one wonder about the legitimacy of the current southeast division leaders. The Panthers have a goal differential of five, which is tied for second-worst among division leaders. While Florida, on paper, doesn’t appear to be a true playoff contender, it currently stands as one of five teams in the east with a positive goal differential. It will be interesting to see if the Panthers are the real deal or if they are simply benefitting from struggling division rivals.

In other news, Sidney Crosby’s two-game departures seem to be more serious than previously thought. It is now being reported that Crosby is suffering from concussion like symptoms, which would make his expected return on Tuesday doubtful. While he passed the concussion test and does not have a concussion, he has been dealing with a headache and is keeping himself out of the lineup as a precaution.
