Jose Fernandez

“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”

Fernandez was originally scheduled to pitch Sunday’s game, but his start had been moved to Monday. Sunday’s game between the Marlins and the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Stadium was canceled following the news.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reportedly received a call about an accident at 3 AM Sunday morning.  A Coast Guard crew was dispatched from Miami station. Upon arrival, they found an overturned boat that had crashed into the rocks and overturned. Fernandez was one of three people found at the scene. Rescue crews are searching for more potential victims.

Fernandez was drafted 11th overall by the Marlins in 2011. He was a dominant pitcher in his 2013 rookie season, posting a record of 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 172.2 innings pitched. After overcoming Tommy John surgery in 2014, he returned to form this season with a record of 16-8, a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts in 182.1 innings pitched.
