Squad deep enough to cope

The matchup between two traditional powerhouses of French football, Olympique Marseille and Girodins de Bordeaux is set to take place tonight. The clubs placed second and fourth respectively have been in good form from the beginning of the season, but Marseille’s brilliant form has somewhat degraded lately whereas Bordeaux has only picked up the pace. Tonight will get even more interesting, since Marseille will be missing key elements from their lineup.

The definite absentees are no.1 central defender N’Koulou and midfielder Romao, who are serving suspensions. More worrisome the situation becomes when dynamic midfielder Andre Ayew and central defender, the most likely cover for N’Koulou, Morel are not available due injuries. Both have been struggling for fitness and might be out altogether, but definitely not 100%. Bordeaux has had their own injury worries, but coped extremely well by rotating the squad from the beginning – none of the players have become irreplaceable. Tonight Bordeaux will be without central defender Thiago Ilori and striker Cheick Diabate.

With the first choice starting XI’s Marseille are considered clear favorites by AccuScore simulations:

Money Line Line Line% ACC% Goals
Marseille 1.71 57.2 71.5 2.22
Bordeaux 5.45 18.0 9.6 0.68
Draw 3.94 24.8 18.9

If we replace the four key players, who are likely to be out for the matchup, the AccuScore simulation still considers Marseille favorites, albeit with slightly reduced percentage:

Money Line Line Line% ACC% Goals
Marseille 1.71 57.2 68.0 2.04
Bordeaux 5.45 18.0 10.0 0.67
Draw 3.94 24.8 22.0

Both of the clubs have quality squads including the rotation players, but Marseille with their prolific scoring, led by Pierre-Andre Gignac with enough threat from the midfield, seem to run out as winners from this one.
