Why save the timeout?Posted by twilliams in Untagged |
At the moment I am coming off a loss in my money league where I sat Steven Jackson for LenDale White. Thanks to a poor performance by Tony Romo, and a strong performance tonight by Adrian Peterson, I am eliminated. I can't really complain about all of that, because it was my stupid decision that led to the loss.
With that being said, something was interesting at the end of tonight's game. The Vikings were kneeling the ball to run out the clock, and the Bears had one timeout left. The Vikings kneeled the final time with 14 seconds remaining, up by a touchdown. Why wouldn't Lovie Smith call the time out? There is no loss to this situation. Consider the scenarios:
1. The Vikings could run a play and try to kill 14 seconds. It's hard to run a 14 second play without losing a lot of yards, so the Bears have a chance to get good field position with a little bit of time left.
2. The Vikings are forced to punt, but kick out of bounds. There is no way this runs 14 seconds off the clock.
3. The Vikings punt to Hester, who has a chance to return the punt for a touchdown.
My only guess is that Smith had given up on the season, although with a win the Bears still remain alive.
That game was an exciting one to watch with Peterson and Hester having the ability to break a long play at any time. The part that I didn't enjoy as much was the quarterback play. Both of these teams need to invest in a quarterback next season. These two quarterbacks combined for zero touchdowns and five turnovers tonight. There is no way that the Vikings win in the playoffs with Jackson.
That's my rant for the night.
