Only the first week of the season is in the books and I already have my fatal attraction back for college football.

Yes Michigan and Applachian State dominated the headlines, but there are several other schools who should be brought up on charges of contenders or pretenders.

 Contenders:

Cal showed against Tennessee that for the first game of the year they are the best team in the Pac-10.  Cal dominated on offense, defense and special teams and have the one item USC lacks, a playmaker.  See DeSean Jackson.  Last year he returned 20% of his returns for touchdowns, this year he's one for one.  He's this year's Teddy Ginn Jr., mark it down.

Georgia also appears on my list for the way they handled Oklahoma State.  This was supposed to be a breakout year for the Cowboys, but all OK-state showed was that the Big 12 is still miles behind the SEC.  Adarius Bowman and company were, in some outlets, regardes as the best offense in the land.  Against Georgia they mustered 266 yards of total offense.

Pretenders:

Obviously, Michigan gets a free pass on this one, but what about Florida State.  How long does Bobby Bowden get a free pass on to the Top 25 when he continues to have marginal teams.  In the "Bowden Bowl"  Clemson outperformed, outclassed, and outmatched the Seminoles.  I can't see Florida State doing any better finishing with a 7-5 or more likely 6-6 record.

USC. Now this one might shock some but they looked absolutely dreadful against Idaho.  If it were the Trojans instead of Michigan taking on App. State, it may have been USC being a part of the biggest upset in college football history.  Look at the game closely and you'll see that Idaho played better than USC for the majority of the game, but just did not have the blue chippers to compete physically. In fact, in the second and third quarters Idaho outgained the Trojans.  Yikes!

SC has two weeks to get it going again as they travel to Lincoln to face Nebraska.  Two weeks to get away from the Pretenders and back with the Contenders.
