The Colts 5-0: Who the Hell Cares?

All the talk of the league is the Patriots and Cowboys yet flying quietly under the radar are the Indianapolis Colts. What? The Colts? Yeah, those Colts. And trust me, they are loving it.

For what seems like the past decade, Peyton Manning and the Colts have been the highflying media darlings and carried that pressure until they finally shook the ‘big game’ monkey off their backs last season with a convincing Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears. You can’t imagine what it’s like playing under that level of scrutiny and media attention for years and how good it feels tofinally have that yoke off their necks this year. It’s like a piano’s weight was lifted from Manning.

This year is different for Peyton and the Colts. According to the media, the Super Bowl victory is a foregone conclusion, clearly going to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. The only thing still in question is whether the Patriots can finally take the undefeated record away from the 1972 Dolphins.

This is kind of surprising since the Colts dominated the Super Bowl last year and are also 5-0 on the season, have faced tougher teams than both Dallas an New England and yet the Colts are quietly third in total offense, third in scoring, third in yards per play and third in yards per game. They trail only…well, do I even need to say it? The Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots. And while some teams might feel disrespected as underdogs after winning the Super Bowl. Not the Colts. They are exactly where they want to be; not under the media spot light. No pressure. No scrutiny.

We’ll know a little more after October 14th when the Patriots travel to Dallas but we will know a whole lot more on November 4th when the Patriots travel to Indianapolis. Until then, don’t get caught up in all the media hype and forget that the Super Bowl champs are sitting right where they want to be, under the radar.

To "Dallas Fan", that's not the point he was trying to make. The point is that even if your Dallas cowboys are 5-0, when it comes time to play a REAL team like NE or Indy, they probably aren't as good as their record indicates. Dallas has had one of the easiest schedules in the league this year, along with New England. I'm still not convinced New England is the best team in the NFL, despite columnists and media hounds declaring their superiority over everything. Indy has had a much harder schedule already, and they've prevailed. NE at Indy will pretty much be the best game of the year. Dallas, even if they make the superbowl (which they very well should, since they're playing in the Kindergarten Conference), will probably lose to whoever represents teh AFC.

That wasn't what I was saying. I used that to show why the Colts are only 3rd in scoring, etc. because they have played some tougher teams. I agree with you 1000% though on all these people saying Dallas' wins don't mean anything because they are against opponents with a combined record of 6-19. That's total BS plus New England's opponents are a combined 7-17. So what? Indy won super-ugly last year in Buffalo. By one point thanks to a missed field goal by the Bills at the end of the game and I seem to recall that they may have won a Super Bowl or something, I'll have to check on that. The W is all that matters. Thanks for the great comments!

Man don't pick apart wins. It doesn't matter who you have beaten. At the end of the season they don't say well since your 10 wins were against better teams you can have the playoff spot of a team with a softer schedule. In the NFL a win is a win.
