The Bully Falters

A few weeks back I wrote in my 7 in '07 column how the BCS had taken the little man out of the equation.  Well, this past week, the underdog fought back.

Six out of the Top 11 went down.  Except for West Virginia and Oregon, all went down to unranked opponents.  Of course, none came against non-BCS opponents but it is a step in the right direction.  Many will say, "see the BCS conferences are strong."

I see that many of htese same schools who beat the powerhouses are the same schools who lost to lesser conferences in non-conference games.

I see this past week's games as a reflection of where college football is heading and unless we do something to fix the obvious closing gap, we will continue to see supposed upsets rather than great competition.

On to the Contenders and Pretenders:

CONTENDERS:

USC, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Cal, West Virginia, Oregon, Kentucky.

It's about time we add South Florida to this list.  Seven years after this program was birthed from a trailer in Tampa, the Bulls have taken everybody by surprise, including yours truly.  Wins over West Virginia and Auburn give them the right to be in the Top 10, if not the Top 5.

PRETENDERS:

You may have noticed I didn't take anyone down from the Contenders list.  That's because one loss in college football hardly constitutes such rash decisions, as for the schools who have crossed to the dark side:

Penn State, what happend?  Two straight losses to Michigan and Illinois and you are on your way to another 8-4 season, congratulations.

Alabama, you had everyone in Crimson ready to hand Nick Saban their virgin daughters, now you are once again average.  Fear not, Tide, Saban has them on the right track, remember Rome was not built in a day.

I guess my comment did not show up on the screen. I predicted Hawaii and LSU to go down in the next two weeks. Well it almost happen to two of them in one week. Hawaii has a bye next week and they are powerful at home so we will wait for the following.
