Fantasy owners looking for saves have a few new options becoming available soon, they just might have to wait awhile, and do some speculating. Mike Gonzalez is obviously the first choice currently available. He was activated on Wednesday, and got a save the same day. Rafael Soriano is on the disabled list for the second time this season with elbow problems and can’t be considered reliable. Gonzalez himself is coming off Tommy John surgery, but he is the closer and is probably the only full-time one available to any degree is most leagues. Grab him quick if you can.

Looking deeper, Joel Zumaya will probably return to the Detroit bullpen on Friday. Todd Jones just isn’t very good, but that hasn’t stopped him from closing the past few seasons. This year though his performance has slipped a bit further (1.44 WHIP, just 10 K in 26.1 IP). Zumaya threw 98 mph this past week in a rehab stint so the same incredible velocity is there. Just keep him away from the Guitar Hero, and he may eventually be pitching regularly in the ninth inning as soon as this season.

Out in Oakland, Huston Street has to be a prime candidate to be traded even with the A’s contending and of course, there is always the risk of injury. Santiago Casilla should be back as soon as Thursday throwing gas and dominating hitters (0.93 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 22 K in 19.1 IP). He’s useful even in default public leagues if he never takes the closer role.

Looking even more long-range (or if you’re just crazy like me) Brian Fuentes is almost a lock to be traded if the Rockies decide to go the fire-sale route and rebuild. In that case, Taylor Bucholz would be next in line. He too is very useful even as a middle reliever (0.79 WHIP, 27 K in 36.2 IP).
