Once Upon A Time There Was a Team Called NebraskaPosted by Zach in Untagged |
Once upon a time Nebraska used to be good, but if you were born after 1990 you probably will have to take my word for it. But during this time, if you played the Big Red it meant either they would stay atop the polls or there was an upset that would rock the very foundation that held up college football. These were the days of Tom Osbourne, Turner Gill, Steve Taylor, Broderick Thomas, Mike Croel, Ken Clark, Mike Rosier and other names that are synonomys with the golden era of college football.
But ever since Miami humbled Nebraska in the 1991 Orange Bowl, the program just has not been the same. They still have those oversized corn fed lineman and still have some of the greatest uniforms in college football. Theyusually have a good running back and sometimes they have great name's such as "Thunder Collins." But what Nebraska doesn't have is winning football.
It's easy for me to drone on about Nebraska's glory years, but that is because I can remember them. But I am a balding thirty-something who prefers movies over bars and not a high school stud with breakaway speed. Nebraska has lost all sense of who they are and there is nothing to say that they will ever be back.
Sure we like to think about Nebraska among the greatest programs that make up college football, but to do so you must also live in the past. The tenure of Bill Callahan has caused the Huskers to abandon yelling "Go Big Red" and replace it with "One Time" and "Lets Go!" Prior to Callahan, crossing your fingers and praying had never been common practice when hosting the likes of Ball State or traveling to Missouri. Usually the Huskers reserved their losses for big games that command the national spotlight.
Nebraska's Athletic Director, Steve Pederson gave Bill "of goods" Callahan a six-year extension this year and has asked the Husker faithful to drink the Kool Aid of mediocrity, but something has gone wrong. It seems the Big Red support machine has started to add up that 2+2=4 and Callahan is in peak form by showing Husker fans just how easy it is to become irrelevant when the Lord answers your prayers and you actually do hold off off Ball State.
The great thing is Nebraska supporters will jump on me for this and call me names and look for grammatical mistakes to discredit what I am writing and my response to that is "Exactly!" You can point out my short comings all day and I will agree with most of them. However, when the dust settles and the smoke clears, you will have to process the reality that there is really no good reason that Nebraska will ever be a powerhouse in America's greatest game again. The geography is not stellar, the recruiting base is bland and the tradition rich history they pride themselves on is just that...history. Today's high school athletes just don't have any reason to know who Nebraska is and certainly have not seen any recent evidence that indicates they are a National Championship caliber program.
Ironically this is the same reality that faced their rival Oklahoma in 1998 as John Blake went 12-22 in an attempt to donk off what Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson spent years building. The difference is that the Sooners did not hire a joker with a proven track record of failing and then give him an extension once he exercised his legacy in his new surroundings. The Sooners have an innovator in Bob Stoops and Nebraska has Bill Callahan and there you have it.
Enjoy winter in Nebraska, as well as the next six years.

Yes, Nebraska is in another year of mediocrity. Yes, you did miss out on the National Championships of the '90s. Yes, they have extended Bill Callahan's contract. They also had extended the Athletic Director's (Steve Pederson) contract this year as well. That still didn't stop them from doing something about him running the program into the ground. They fired him yesterday. They are now talking about appointing Tom Osborne to the interim AD position. The next to go will probably be Kevin Cosgrove, the Defensive Coordinator. Then finally good old Bill. The winds of change are in the air here in Nebraska. Yes, we will have to wait some more years before righting this failed attempt. By the way, thanks for mentioning Oklahoma. That lets me think that Nebraska has another chance to redeem itself after the foul taste of Callahan is relieved from the mouths of NU fans. Once the boosters start pulling funding from the program, and they had eluded to doing that, then changes will be following closely behind. As they have already. Husker nation will not stand for mediocrity. I had a chance to be at the OSU @ NU game on Saturday. Yes, I did stay the entire game. I watched the sidelines to see what coaching was being done during this disaster of a game. I watched the sidelines of OSU. They were having huddles with their players after every series. They were kickingthe crap out of NU. Yet they were still actively coaching their players. Were they doing the same on the NU sideline? NO! The coaches are there for one reason. To coach. If they don't do their jobs then they will have to pay by giving them up. Mark my words, more change is coming for Nebraska Football!

Nebraska owned the 90's by winning 3 National Championships and playing for 2 more. Get your facts straight idiot.

At least Callahan's contract is over in 6 years. I have to hope that someone lures Charlie Weis back to the NFL before my unborn children reach college age. Nebraska may be mediocre, but as an Irish fan, I have to deal with something much worse: Year after year of players who do not live up to the hype. Last years team was not as good as their record indicated, as they could have easily lost to Mich St. and UCLA. This year is so painful, I chose not to go see the Irish play UCLA and despite the win, I think it was the right choice. I don't want to wake the echos with talk about the Lou's Holtz glory years, but I miss something that Lou brought to the Irish: Swagger. The last 10 years have been full of guys who think putting on the Golden Dome and touching the "Play like a Champion Today" Plaque is enough to be part of the legends of Notre Dame. Charlie Weis has forgotten that college football is about athletes. He thinks he can plug and play anyone in his masterful system, a la the Patriots, but it obviously doesn't translate. His guys look scared and unsure and so do the fans. I miss the Rocket and Tony Rice; guys who were athletes with a passion for winning and respect for the traditions of Notre Dame football.

I remember the days that people feared the option of Nebraska. Nice work Zach, you forgot to mention that Callahan is still riding the coat tails of Jon Gruden.

Nice article, Nebraska did win 3 National Titles in the early 90's after losing to Miami in 1991 so I don't know what that's referring to but none the less your are on point the rest of the article. You were just off a little by discounting 3 natl titles in a 4 year period. Callahan is a loser and he will continue being a loser.
