Remember that team that grinds out the clock with run after run? Well, the Pittsburgh Steelers are only a single field goal behind Peyton and the Colts. And no one is even closeto the Cowboys in scoring with a whopping 83 points in two games.
What the hell is going on? Let's start in Detroit. Granted, I don't think wins over the Raiders and a miracle win over the Vikings is cause for massive celebration yet. I slammed the Lions at the beginning of the season for drafting yet another 1st round wide receiver but I'll man up. Calvin Johnson looks like the real deal and combined with Roy Williams, this is a very dangerous receiving corps. Maybe the best in the league. But what I have been particularly impressed with is the play and the grit of John Kitna. He has showed a lot of heart and an ability to hit his receivers and do what it takes to move the chains. Still, the Lions haven't been truly tested yet. That might occur next week at the Eagles but the big test will be in week four at home versus the Bears. Amazing start but jury still out. Then again, 2-0 is amazing for the Lions so I'll give them that.
How about the anemic New Orleans Saints? They can't stop anyone and they can't score. Sure, you can write off opening week against the Colts but flailing miserably against the Buccaneers? Before the start of the season I said that they would have a drop off and probably not win the NFC South but I didn't think they'd drop this bad. The are plummeting faster than Thelma and Louise. The Saint's next two games are both at home against the Titans and Panthers so there is no rest for the weary. The Saints better hope to be at 2-2 by week four's end. I'd also like to add that I thought the Eagles releasing Garcia was a big mistake and this week, Garcia had my back. He played great.
Some of you may think the Cardinals beating the Seahawks is an upset. I don't. I expected Seattle to drop this season and not win the division. Not sure Holmgern and the boys even make a wild card this year.
Now the Texans beating the Panthers to go 2-0, tied with the Colts. That's news. What makes this news is both the outstanding defensive performance of the Texans, that weird non-tackle of Steve Smith play not withstanding and the impressive and solid performance of Matt Schaub. Who? Exactly.
The Browns scored 51 points. Do I need to say any more than that? Just in case you missed it, the Browns scored 51 points against a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Not with that defense. Sorry Cincinnati fans. If you let Cleveland score 51, how well do you think you're going to do against the Colts, Patriots or Chargers? So to all the Bengal fans who flamed me for dare suggesting the Steelers might get a wild card or even compete for the AFC North, let me talk a language you understand. "Who dey?" "Dey" is the Cleveland Browns and "Dey" just embarrassed your ass.
