Looking for Late Season Help?Posted by jonlee in Todd Wellemeyer, Paul Byrd, Marlon Byrd, Jody Gerut, Jensen Lewis, fantasy baseball, Denard Span |
Most trading deadlines have past in fantasy leagues so the main source of help is going to come from the waiver wire. Here are a few players that are hot over recent days and can help you bring home a fantasy championship.
Marlon Byrd, TEX OF: He has 16 hits in his last five games including five hits, four runs, and three RBI in that basketball game that broke out at Fenway on Tuesday. He’s hitting .491 over the past two weeks, and has even stolen two bases.
Paul Byrd, BOS SP: Sale on Byrds this week. The veteran righty was traded to Boston, and has been pitching very well recently. He will start on Friday in place of Clay Bucholz, and has won four consecutive starts. In that span his line is: 29 IP, 1.24 ERA, 0 HR. The K/BB ratio isn’t all that great (12:7), but he’s clearly a viable spot starter and is more likely to get some wins as a member of the Red Sox.
Jody Gerut, SD OF: Shockingly, Gerut has been very good for the past month hitting .321 with 8 HR and 15 RBI. It’s hard to recommend any Padres besides Adrian Gonzalez, but Gerut could be a nice replacement if you recently lost Carl Crawford or Carlos Lee.

Denard Span, MIN OF: He wasn’t expected to be this good this soon, but he’s endeared himself to Twins management and fans alike. Span has three steals and 12 runs over the past two weeks while not hurting your average (.291).

Todd Wellemeyer, STL SP: Three straight quality starts, and with Chris Carpenter having more injury problems he’s staying in the rotation. He also has a 13:3 K/BB ratio over those last three outings (only one win though).

Jensen Lewis, CLE RP: He’s got two saves in less than a week with Rafael Perez setting him up in both games. Lewis isn’t all that great, but he has better numbers than Masa Kobayashi or Rafael Betancourt and he hasn’t allowed a run in seven consecutive outings. Manager Eric Wedge seems to want to keep Perez in middle relief so Lewis is in line for some saves. The Indians are a better team than their record shows (according to run differential) so they could in line for a run of wins which would greatly benefit your team.
