I like the favorites in this weekend's blowoutsPosted by oh_steve in Untagged |
So LSU easily covered the spread (opened at 16, moved to 19 in most books) which AccuScore expected. By trouncing Mississippi State on a Thursday, the #2 Tigers raised the bar for other Top Ranked teams like USC, Oklahoma, and Texas.
I don't have all the spreads in front of me, but I'm sure each of these teams are favored by 37 points or more. I don't think the BCS computers give any credit for killing a bad team by 50 vs. by 40 points, but to win the battle of public opinion, these Pac 10 and Big 12 Teams will want to show that they can absolutely dominatelesser competition just like LSU.
Of course LSU will point to the fact that they won 45-0 vs. another SEC Team. For USC to keep pace in Week 1 they'll need to beat Idaho by 50+ points. Texas will want to kill Arkansas State by 60 and Oklahoma will look to win 50 to 0 vs. North Texas. Let's face it, whenever you have these big spreads, the favored team 9 times out of 10 can decide whether they win by 30, 40, 50 or even 60. By LSU coming out 45-0 on Thursday night, these other Top Teams will look to show that they are equally dominant.
I have zero allegiance to any of these top rated teams. I grew up a maryland sports fan, so besides cheering for Boomer Esiason way back when, I never felt a strong affiliation towards a dominant college football team. As an unbiased fan, I'm a believer in the dominance of the SEC, and for one team to win on the road against any SEC team 45-0 makes me think they would beat Idaho, North Texas or Arkansas State 60-0.
So if I'm typical of many general public fans and perhaps general college ranking pollsters, I'll be looking for these teams to cover these enormous spreads to keep up with the Joneses from LSU.

| I, in fact, already had $$ on the Texas game, as Arkansas St will really provide zero competition for who I feel is the best team in the Big 12. Plus Texas has shown in the past a real ability to pile up the points early in the season. They don't seem to like to have mercy on the competition. USC can put up the points to easily beat Idaho, but Pete Carroll is not the type of coach to care if his team wins by 30 or 60. I am personally staying away from that game. Oklahoma, on the other hand, is another game that is IMO a coin flip whether or not they cover. Stoopes does not like to embarrass his opponents like Carroll, and even though the Mean Green will likely provide zero competition, I would hesitate putting any $$ on that game. So, in summary, go hard on Texas, and stay away from the other 2 is what I'll be doing. |
