Home sweet homePosted by twilliams in Tim Williams, Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL, Detroit Red Wings, AccuScore |
Since February 24th I have done a lot of things. This would include doing my taxes, filing my taxes, and getting my tax return back from the IRS. I moved to a new house, I set up the new house (well, my wife did a lot of it...I just set up my office and did the heavy lifting), and we got a cat in the new house. I drafted a ton of fantasy baseball teams, made a ton of trades in those leagues, and then drafted more leagues after 25% of the baseball season passed.
I watched the Penguins acquire Marian Hossa at the trade deadline. I watched Marc-Andre Fleury come backfrom injury and resemble a brick wall. I saw the Penguins finish the last month and a half of the season on a hot streak, giving them the number two playoff seed. I watched the Penguins sweep the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the playoffs. I watched the Penguins beat the Rangers 4-1 in the second round of the playoffs. I watched the Penguins take a 3-0 lead over the Flyers in the third round of the playoffs.
You know what I did not see during all of this time? The Penguins losing a home game.
February 24th was the last time the Penguins lost a home game, losing 2-1 in overtime to the San Jose Sharks. That's almost three months without a loss at home, which is remarkable. The Penguins are 7-0 at home in the playoffs this season, with two chances at home to close out the Flyers and advance to the Stanley Cup finals.
If, or rather, when the Penguins go to the Stanley Cup finals, they will finally play a series without home ice advantage. The problem here is that, while the Red Wings don't have the nearly-three month streak, they do have an 8-0 record at home in the playoffs. Do I think that one team will finally lose at home in the playoffs? Yes. Do I think that the team who wins on the road will be the team to win the series? Yes.
Current AccuScore projections have Detroit winning in seven games, taking the series in 53 percent of the time. The Stanley Cup finals may come down to game seven, where the Penguins won't have their amazing home ice advantage against Detroit. This makes an upset in games 1, 2, or 5 extremely necessary to ensure game six is the deciding game, assuming the Penguins continue their refusal to lose in Pittsburgh.
