Cut to the ChasePosted by jonlee in San Diego Padres, rookies, MLB, Fantasy, Chase Headley |
One of the last ready-made major league prospects has finally been brought up to the bigs. San Diego’s Chase Headley joined the team over the weekend, and will likely join the lineup Tuesday against the Yankees. The Padres are starved for run production and power (outside of Adrian Gonzalez who is having a monster year) and Headley certainly will help. A switch-hitter, he has hit 13 home runs, 40 RBI, and 34XBH at Triple-A this year with a .305 average. He walked in nearly 10 percent of his 259 at-bats as well.
Headley is a third baseman by trade, but is blocked by Kevin Kouzmanoff so he will see most of his time in left field. The Padres, and consequently fantasy owners, should see a major boost out in left since that means no more of the troika of Justin Huber, Paul McAnulty, and Scott Hairston. Almost all rookies suffer their ups and downs meaning Headley will be inconsistent, but should produce solid numbers. He had a brief call-up last season, and is ready to handle the majors on a daily basis. Headley won’t match his minor league average, but he could compile similar counting stats, which probably places him just outside the top 30 for outfielders in mixed leagues. He should immediately be owned in any 12-team, NL-only, or deeper league.

San Diego is finally playing for the future by calling up top prospect Chase Headley.
