BCS to Cinderella: Go Make Me a Sandwich...

Despite 99% of college football fans getting on their hands and knees and begging, we are still without a playoff. It’s 2007 and we remain saddled with Bowl tradition and odds are we will have another Championship Game determined by politicking on talk-shows instead of plays on the field. College football presents the rare opportunity where our worst nightmares are confirmed. Where the bully wins and it is in your best interest to step on others in an effort to prop yourself up.

Since its inception, the Oklahoma Sooners have benefited the most from the BCS and is the best example of how the elitist system rewards those rich in tradition. Despite getting blown out in the Big XII Championship Game in 2003, OU was placed in the BCS Title game against LSU, while USC launched their dynasty against Michigan from the Rose Bowl. A year later, OU was deemed one of the two best teams in the country, thus denying Auburn a title shot despite going undefeated and winning the country's toughest conference.

Just give everyone a chance. A chance...isn't that what America is built on? Hell, isn’t that what every single sport is built on? At its best, sports serve as a metaphor of Americana where each team starts out 0-0 with a chance to prove themselves against one another to find out who is best. But that is not how it works in college football.

Late August means it’s time to drink the proverbial Kool-Aid and hope your team wins with enough style so we can shut the door on those buggers from the WAC and keep them out of "our" National Championship picture. I say "our" because I am a Sooner which makes me a Big XII guy and by default, a member of the Power Conference Hierarchy where playing for BCS crystal is a God given right.

The last thing “we” need is some bunch of undefeated overachievers with incredible work ethic and a refuse to die mentality screwing things up by inserting themselves into the BCS debate and potentially denying an 8-4 Notre Dame team a chance at $14M.

Do you hear that Boise State?!?! You went undefeated, played your hearts out, battled adversity, pulled off one of the most stunning upsets and exciting victories in the history of the sport...for what? To be Fiesta Bowl champs and have the BCS say “thanks for coming out” while thinking “we hope you never make it back.” The sad reality is that the clock struck midnight on the Boise States of the world the moment the BCS contract was signed. No glass slipper. No Prince Charming. No Big Dance.

The BCS continues to spend the autumn months telling fans their system works with the same credibility of my creepy uncle who wants me to invest in his Pyramid scheme. In an effort to expose these jokers for their lack of competitive ethics, I have gone beyond the numbers and found some fascinating information about the BCS and their thoughts on other sports.

  • The BCS loves pro wrestling. Any "sport" with fascinating storylines deserves a pre-determined outcome.

  • The BCS thinks horse racing is great but does not understand why a 20-1 shot deserves to be on the track with the odds on favorite.

  • The BCS loves to play Chess but thinks the pawns, rooks, bishops and knights get in the way of the Kings.

  • The BCS loves poker but thinks that pocket aces should take down the pot based on the fact it is the best starting hand in NL Hold ‘Em.

  • The BCS resents the NFL and thinks the Super Bowl is just a big rouse to promote commercial advertising.

At the end of the day, I want to thank the BCS for continuing to breathe life into a process that lives on school yards throughout the country. Who needs a playoff when you are better suited to push out your chest and scream, “We are #1. Our cheerleaders are hotter than yours. My fraternity can kick your fraternity’s ass, your marching band sucks and {INSERT CLICHÉ MALE BRAVADO COMMENT}…”

Your absolutely right. However, as an OU fan also, I love the bowl system. Why would I want to give up a system that rewards tradition rich schools such as ourssmilies/smiley.gif Great article though!

Anyone who watches the nature shows with the same ferocity as I knows that those gators (and crocodiles) take care of their young by gently placing them in their mouth and guiding them to the relative safety of the shallows. Apparently, Monsieur Rosenfield ain't no gator! He has turned his back on the protection and comfort of the Sooner Nation. And for what...justice and equality! What have those principles ever done for the human race? Perhaps he should be a Penn State fan...we all know lions eat their own.

Your points are duly noted. There is no doubt OU benefited the most with the new BCS system. I also can agree that there is no doubt OU's cheerleaders are hotter than any "mid-major" type school like Boise. There marching band aint much to look at either. Nerds.
