The Devils learned Tuesday that Martin Brodeur will have to undergo surgery on his elbow, which could sideline the star goaltender for three to four months, putting him in danger of missing the majority of the regular season. AccuScore simulated the rest of the season for the Devils to find the impact Brodeur’s absence would have on the team. Before the injury, the Devils were forecasted to win 45 games, with a 34 percent chance of winning their division, and an 84 percent chance of making the playoffs. The remainder of the season does not look good for the Devils with Kevin Weekes in net. Without Brodeur, the Devils are only winning 37 games, an eight game swing from simulations with Brodeur. The Devils also have little chance of winning their division, winning the Atlantic division in just three percent of AccuScore simulations. Their chances of making the playoffs also takes a big hit, dropping 59 percentage points to give the Devils a 25 percent chance of making the playoffs.

| A horrible injury, especially since the muscle detached at the elbow. Very painful. I would not wish this on anyone, least of all someone as talented as Marty is. teri |
