AMERICAN LEAGUE The only meaningful playoff race remaining in the American League is in the AL Central where Minnesota went 5-1, including 2 of 3 over Detroit. The Twins are still a relative long-shot to win the division since they are currently 3 games back. The Twins are only making the playoffs 15 percent of the time because they only have 3 remaining home games, the rest are road games against division rivals, including Detroit. The White Sox are technically not eliminated from the playoffs, but at 2.3 percent chance they are realistically eliminated. The Rangers were just 1-5 this week, are behind by 7.5 games and they have only 3 remaining home games. Their playoff chances dropped from 12.5 percent to less than 1 percentage point. The Yankees have a 5 game lead and Boston’s chances of winning the AL East are still alive at 6 percent. Even if they cannot come back to win the division, Boston is a lock to make the playoffs as the Wild Card.
NATIONAL LEAGUE There is not much drama in the NL East or NL Central. The Phillies and Cardinals are both winning the division over 99 percent of the time. The Rockies currently hold a 4.5 game lead in the Wild Card race and even though they only have a 0.8 percent chance of catching the Dodgers for the NL West lead, they improved their overall playoff chances to 86 percent. They only went 3-3 this week, but these were all road games. At this point in the season a split on the road is a good performance and now the Rockies have 9 of their last 12 games at home. The Giants, Marlins and Braves only have a combined 14 percent chance of catching the Rockies for the NL Wild Card.
