a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Pineda is seeking a second opinion but there appears to be little hope that he can avoid the procedure, which could potentially keep him sidelined until 2019. Since Pineda will be a free agent at the end of the 2017 season, his pitching career in Yankee pinstripes is very likely over.

No official announcement has been made by the Yankees regarding who will replace Pineda in the starting rotation, but one intriguing possibility is the potential call up of 22-year-old right-hander Chance Adams, who is currently pitching for the team’s Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre club. Adams has made 10 starts there and has a record of 6-3 with a 2.50 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and is striking out 10 batters per nine innings; opponents are batting just .164 of him. He began the season in Double-A, where he put together a record of 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. General manager Brian Cashman has not ruled out calling Adams up but he did say that for now, Luis Cessa will likely take what would have been Pineda’s next start some time next week.
