Michael Waterloo’s Early 2018 Fantasy Baseball Rankings

With Spring Training just weeks away, there are many – and we do mean many – key free agents that haven’t found a home yet.

Compiling Fantasy Baseball rankings, in general, is a very time-consuming – yet enjoyable – process, but with so many Fantasy-relevant players yet to sign, the process is extra challenging at this early stage.

Here are a few guys that I like this year more than the industry.

Rhys Hoskins – Rhys Hoskins or Cody Bellinger? Cody Bellinger or Rhys Hoskins? That will be the debate this year, but I have a feeling 75 percent or so of the industry will side with Bellinger. That’s fair, and there’s a good chance he outperforms Hoskins this year. I will, however, side with Hoskins. I like the lower strikeout rate and the higher walk rate. Maybe Bellinger improves on those and passes Hoskins, who had about 350 more at-bats in the minors. But I trust the eye at the plate and the ability to make hard, solid contact more for Hoskins.

Zack Godley – We love Luis Severino, and rightfully so! But why don’t we have the same affection when it comes to Godley? Maybe because he’s older and doesn’t have the pedigree, which is fair. But did you know that only two pitchers had a 13 percent SwStr% and 50 percent groundball rate last year, as highlighted by Ryan Bloomfield of Baseball HQ? Yeah, they were Godley and Severino. I’m all in on Godley as a Top 20 pitcher this year.

Justin Turner – Turner over Josh Donaldson may seem eye-popping at first, but have you noticed what this guy has been doing year in and year out? He’s going to hit you 20 home runs, he’s going to hit .300 in a loaded lineup, he has a good walk and strikeout rate. We continue to keep one of the best players in baseball underrated each season.
