Accuscore's KHL Season Preview 2018/2019

The new hockey season is around the corner as the Russian based Kontinental Hockey League faces off on Saturday the 1st of September and Accuscore is right there from the beginning.

Last season it was Ak Bars Kazan celebrating their third Gagarin Cup win, seven years after their double in 2009 and 2010. Western conference giants CSKA Moscow was still left without the title, as was the star-studded SKA St. Petersburg. The duo is once again deemed the biggest favorites to win the Gagarin Cup this season.

Often touted as the second best league in the world after the NHL, KHL has undergone some changes for the coming season. Two teams, Lada Togliatti and Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk, have been dropped, while Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod transferred from Western Conference to the East. The changes make up for 12 teams in the Western and 13 in the Eastern side. In total 775 games are played in the regular season, 62 per team and the top eight teams from each conference head to the playoffs.

With the Accuscore simulation engine run by the supercomputer, we can determine how the KHL season 2018/2019 is the most likely to pan out. Each game is simulated for approximately 10 000 times, resulting in the most probable outcome after all the 775 games are done and dusted. Of course, it’s likely some changes occur during the season, including trades and injuries, but that’s why Accuscore keeps on updating the season forecast throughout the season.

The simulations agree closely in line with the oddsmakers assessment of the Gagarin Cup winning odds. The teams making playoffs in the Western Conference are the top-8 teams according to the odds as well, while in the East there’s two disagreements between the Accuscore simulations and the odds.
