College Basketball Analyst Picks - Feb 20
By Jonathan Lee
Syracuse and Kentucky are a combined 53-2, and are clearly the top 2 teams in the country both in the polls and on paper. They will receive top seeds in the NCAA tournament in a few weeks barring any kind of complete breakdown. The other two top seeds are still open for debate.
Missouri is number three in both polls this week, and at 25-2 probably merit the best argument of the remaining teams for a No. 1 seed. The Tigers are 8-1 against the RPI top 50 and have beaten Baylor (twice), Kansas, Iowa State, and Cal. Beating Kansas on Saturday on the road would all but wrap up this seed.
The final spot probably comes down to those Jayhawks, a Big 10 team (Michigan State or Ohio State), and an ACC team (Duke or North Carolina). All five of those teams have good arguments with the rest of the regular season and conference titles being the likely tiebreakers. Right now on paper, the best argument might be made for Duke despite their obvious flaws this season. On a neutral floor, I think I would rank Duke last out of that group, but that is not the way the tournament is selected. Good thing Selection Sunday isn’t here yet. March gets closer and closer every day.
With only 18 games on the schedule and just 3 involving BCS teams Monday, I have only one pick for AccuScore members.
