The Value of Derek Anderson

After the Patriots and Adrian Peterson, the biggest story in the NFL from an offensive perspective is Cleveland's Derek Anderson. The Browns quarterback has won five of seven games and AccuScore simulations give the Browns (5-3) an excellent chance of finishing the season with nine or more wins. However, it was not supposed to go this way. The Browns opened the season with Charlie Frye under center and that quickly proved to be a disaster. The front office acted swiftly by shipping Frye to Seattle and inserting Anderson as the starter and the results have been great. But AccuScore was curious to find out what would have happened if Frye stayed on as the quarterback for Cleveland. We went ahead and simulated the Browns remaining schedule with Charlie Frye at starting quarterback in order to quantify Anderson's impact. The table below shows Cleveland’s winning percentage against upcoming opponents. There are 5 road games and 3 home games left.
AccuScore also wanted to see how much better Anderson has been this year vs. last year. Based on these figures you can understand why Cleveland was not convinced that Anderson should start Week 1. The Anderson from 2006 was simply too turnover prone, but the 2007 Frye has cut down on interceptions while also becoming a prolific touchdown passer.
With Anderson at quarterback, the Browns have a 50% chance of making the playoffs, which is the 6th highest percentage in the AFC and 13 percentage points higher than the 7th placed Kansas City Chiefs. AccuScore projects the Browns to finish 9-7 with a 42.7% probability of finishing with double digit wins. Check out the playoff forecast here. Trackback(0)

Looking at the how 2006 Anderson would have fared against this years oppenents, it seems like he was the better choice going into the year for the Cleveland quarterback situation. Of the eight remaining games, Frye only gave the Browns a better chance at winning once (San Francisco).
"but the 2007 Frye has cut down on interceptions while also becoming a prolific touchdown passer" This should read "but the 2007 [Anderson] has cut down on interceptions while also becoming a prolific touchdown passer".
