NCAA: East Regional Expert Analysis Print E-mail
Stephen Oh - AccuScore Analyst

The Sweet 16 went according to form with both AccuScore favorites, North Carolina and Louisville, winning their games. You have to say that UNC and Louisville have been the most impressive teams in the tournament so far based on their average margin of victory and the eyeball test.

KEYS TO SUCCESS SO FAR
Louisville has been winning thanks, first and foremost, to red hot shooting (52 percent vs. Tennessee, 59 percent vs. Oklahoma, 56 percent vs. Boise State). They dominated the boards against Tennessee (42-24), but they did commit 20 turnovers. They were actually out-rebounded by Boise State and committed 15 turnovers in Round 1.

North Carolina has shot significantly better than all opponents, killed teams on the boards, and has committed just 29 turnovers in 3 tournament games. Both UNC and Louisville have been great defensively holding opponents to 41 percent shooting in the Month of March.

WHY NORTH CAROLINA WILL WIN
North Carolina is shooting a higher Field Goal percentage in simulations (47 percent to 44.7 percent), but when you adjust for Louisville’s three-point shooting advantage (7 per sim vs 4.5 from UNC), it is actually Louisville with the slight advantage in adjusted Field Goal Percentage (56.5 percent to 54.6 percent).

North Carolina is winning 58 percent of simulations thanks the “little things” -- an edge on the boards, turnover margin and free throw percentage. When both teams are shooting well it is the team that has the slight edge in possessions and make the most of their freebies at the line that gets the 3-5 point edge. The four leading UNC scorers in simulations are all shooting 80 percent or higher from the free throw line in simulations while only Jerry Smith of Louisville is above 70 percent among Louisville’s top scorers.

While Tyler Hansbrough may be Player of the Year in most polls, the big advantage UNC has in this match-up is PG Ty Lawson. Lawson has played great in the tournament and his handle and speed will be a huge key to handling Rick Pitino’s pressing defense. Without Lawson, UNC would not have the edge in turnover margin. Louisville on the other-hand lacks consistent PG play. The team’s best passer is Center David Padgett. Guards Jerry Smith and Edgar Sosa are good, but often make mistakes that result in Pitino angrily pulling them from games even in key situations.

HOW LOUISVILLE CAN UPSET NORTH CAROLINA
Even though the little things and Point Guard leadership are in Carolina’s favor, Louisville has the edge in depth. More importantly, it’s not just players off the bench who can consistently contribute solid numbers, they have players who can explode for 20+ points off the bench. If Earl Clark or Jerry Smith are having off-nights you could end up getting 20-12 from Derrick Caracter or Juan Palacios.

Besides Danny Green, UNC does not have a big-time potentially explosive scorer off the bench. If Tyler Hansbrough struggles against the deep Louisville front-line, or if Ty Lawson re-aggravates his ankle injury UNC could be toast against the high pressure Louisville defense. After Lawson went down with injury and Carolina lost at home to Duke, the team re-committed to playing great defense. While there is no reason to believe that they will revert to their mediocre defense, if they do not play with their typical intensity or key interior defenders like Deon Thompson get in foul trouble, then Louisville could shoot 50 percent for the game, and not 44.7 percent as predicted. One or two more made baskets by Louisville gives them the advantage.

Unlike every other game these two teams have played so far this one should be close and I expect the game to be with 3 points with under 4 minutes to go. The reason why I like Carolina in this close game situation is they are less likely to commit a turnover, they are more likely to get a foul call go their way and much more likely to make the clutch free throw.

i pretty sure carolina will beat louisville, i'm thinking in the 70's for both teams. i will not underestimate petino and lousville, however. petino is a great coach, he knows what he is doing and can manage to beat a great team like carolina. it should be a great game. also, for all of you that said carolina isn't a good team, maybe if you got some more wins in the tournament, we could play and actually see.

all i have to say is all you people who thought tennessee could beat louisville are just plain stupid. the reason louisville destroyed them is because tennessee has no depth or true big men besides chism. the louisville vs. unc game will be close as hell though. i can't wait

First and foremost, you all need to take some lessons on proper English followed by a brush-up on typing skills. "ne body?" is this suppose to be anybody? Anyway, UT is a quiet force not to be taken for granted. Let me remind you all who won the Super Bowl this year. No one ever respected the Giants because of "coaching problems" or a hurt tight end, but they found a way to win and that is where it counts the most and when they produced win after win, all there was left to do was hoist the trophy. Ok, so what does this have to do with Tennessee? Well, I understand Tennessee has had close games this year, but they found ways to win and thats all that matters. Despite being seeded number 2 (which was absolute B.S.) I still feel like no one respects Tennessee for what they have accomplished. Bruce Pearl is the heart and soul of that team and it reflects the way the Vols have won this year. Where there is problem, Pearl has found a way to fix it. Take for instance the PG position. Yes, we are struggling but we have managed to overcome the odds and found a way to win. All I am saying is Tennessee is an excellent program and you all need to show some respect where respect is due. We will earn it and show the NCAA that we are serious and we will run with the best of them.

Go Vols!

UNC 66% I would take that and run --which you won't be able to do against the Cougs we can match up well with you and you will have to play defense for 30 seconds each time the cougs have the ball --good luck tomorrow you will need it make sure you have enough Kleenex psycho T will be back next year still in search of his National title
GO COUGS

how can you seriously only have UNC a 66% chance winner over WSU? Washington doesnt have nearly the defensive intensity or ability to slow down the tar heel offense, not the speed or shooters to run with UNC. Secondly, Hansbrough in foul trouble? maybe you should look at a stats sheet before making these predictions and notice that he hasnt fouled out of a game this year. The man plays straight up defense and doesnt take many risks with shot blocks. He realizes his offensive value to his team, as well as the fact that at any given time he has outstanding shot blockers in Alex Stephenson, Deon Thompson, and Danny Green on the floor for help. I would give WSU a 10% chance of winning, and this is only if UNC's shooters (Ellington, Lawson, and Green) cant connect from outside. Even then, WSU will have to have one of its best games of the year to try and pull off a victory.

Alright coach in the making tennessee made it 4 days then what? Did you see the schedule they played over those 6 days? They had to travel to Memphis in that very hostile croud then travel to Vanderbilt to play on that ridiculous court then get there arch rival Kentucky back at home. They were a little tired having to play 2 teams ranked in the top 15 in 3 days. And all you talk about is Chris Lofton have you watched Jajuan Smith play at all this year? He is decent.. Louisville will be a tough match up for the Vols but if they take care of the ball i like them in a close high scoring game against the Cardinals. Unc better not look ahead to the elite 8 either wash st can play with anybody.

For whoever thought carolina could lose to IU, well there already eliminated. Think they could lose to tennessee because of tennessee can play away from home, well carolina hasnt lost yet away from home, including a win over Duke. Wash St. will have trouble with the speed and Arkansas better bring their "A" game and make Carolina play their "F" game. GO HEELS!!! NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

BSU is awesome because they have proven to America by beating BYU and almost beating Washington St. I think that it is crap that ESPN is not giving them a fighting chance just because they are from the WAC. Well all you band wagon fans that always cheer for the team that is no.1 need to man up and find a team and stick with it.

well first of zac, memphis is the most overrated team ever, yes they are athletic but dont know fundamental basketball, so tennessee beating them means nothing, and unc will not lose and will win the title and as for your tennessee team they will not even see the elite 8, listen to the experts when they say that louisville will beat them...because they will.

Closer matchup than you realize:

RPI: UNC 1, Tenn 2
SOS: UNC 3, Tenn 1

Tenn loves fast pace, so does UNC.

Hansbrough gets into foul trouble: advantage Tenn.
Hansbrough doesn't: advantage UNC.

Lofton plays for real: advantage Tenn.
Lofton dissappears: advantage UNC.

Give UNC the edge on where it's played, but it's going to be like 87-84.

well i agree a lot with your bracket but with some of these Tennessee comments. First Tennessee can not top Carolina many people forget about the fast pace of Lawson. That along with Marcus Ginyard and Wayne Ellington and big T of coarse makes them an unstoppable force. Many people especially forget Ellington who has been in the shadows but he is a great player and has one of the best 3-point shooting forms in the ncaa.

Great Bracket here. The only disagreement I might have is Butler being knocked off by Tennessee. Woohoo they made it 4 days ranked #1 then what? They're done. Butler doesn't get enough credit for the fierce rebounding ability and AJ Greaves is an insane shooter. With some of the foul shooters Tennessee has in JP Prince, and sometimes in Tyler Smith send those two guys to the line a lot and Tennessee is done. Also, if you take away the ability of Chris Lofton to free up and hit 3's and get to the line its over.
