| Shaq Demonstrates Why it is a Bad Trade |

The Phoenix Suns lost last night to the Lakers by 6 points. However, the layman thinks that Shaq had 15 points and 9 rebounds are good numbers. But we took at look at his number beyond the 15 and 9. Shaq also went 3 for 8 from the free thow line and was responsible for 3 turnovers. We were able to put some math to it and found that Shaq's presence on the court cost the Suns 7.42 points from those turnovers and missed free throws. We came to this by adjusting Shaq's free throw % (and points) to reflect the team average. In addition, the Suns went 51.6% from the field last night. The 3 turnovers he caused had low end upside of 6 points, therefore costing them 3.06 against their total. This ignores the fact that one of the turnovers led to Laker points. However, these are hard numbers based on the short sample. The Suns shot 92% from the free throw line, so his adjusted totals reflect that abnormally high number. The Suns shoot 80% from the line as a team for the season. Had they did that last night and we used that for Shaq's adjustment, he only cost them 6.54 points. We give no credit for his 15 and 9 because those numbers mirror what Marion would have had. The free throws and turnovers kill the Suns, and will continue to hamper them in the long haul. | The Suns have been losing games before Shaq arrived. The Suns are just quite not the team they were last conference..I think it's not right to blame Shaq's trade. Shaq has improved their defense and rebounding stats. The results for such trade takes time.. Lakers lost to Portland. Does this mean that Pau was a bad trade... |
| 1. Shaq received a lot of fouls, putting the Lakers in the penalty earlier allowing his team more FT attempts than usual, on which they converted 90%. 2. Shaq had Pau Gasol in foul trouble, allowing STAT to score 37 points and grab 15 rebounds. 3. Shaq spread the floor and allowed PHO to shoot uncontested threes all night, yet PHO missed most of them. I'm sorry, but whoever wrote this article is either a Shaq hater or did not watch the game carefully. The 3 points that I mentioned would have been impossible for Shawn Marion to accomplish. Once Shaq gets in better shape (and he was already doing ok, sprinting, diving for loose balls, scoring 9 points in the 4th quarter), and adjusts his lead pass, and once PHO gets used to being so open for threes and starts nailing them, Phoenix will be dominating opponents most of the time. |
| at least 2 of the 3 turnovers were committed starting the break. Hopefully when he gets more in tune with the team that will come down. I would be interested to see how much Shaq contributed to FTA (as in the bonus). They had 30 attempts last night which seemed to be alot more than they usually get. |
