The Dodgers and Diamondbacks have been going in opposite directions in the month of September.  Los Angeles has won 12 of its last 14 games including four of six last week.  Arizona has lost 11 of its last 14 games including five of six this past week.  The teams were neck and neck at the start of the month with Los Angeles trailing the Diamondbacks by two and a half games.  At that time Arizona was winning the NL West in 55.8 percent of AccuScore simulations.

Half a month later L.A. has this division almost wrapped up.  The Dodgers’ winning streak combined with Arizona’s losing ways have given Los Angeles a four and a half game lead, and a 94.4 percent chance of winning the NL West.

The strength of the Dodgers has been their pitching staff.  Derek Lowe has allowed just one earned run in 19.1 innings over this stretch.  Clayton Kershaw has two wins allowing seven runs in 17 innings over three starts.  Chad Billingsley has three wins in three starts allowing four runs in 19.1 innings.  Greg Maddux is the only Dodgers starting pitcher with a loss over this stretch with the starting staff combining for a 10-1 record in the 14 games.

The Dodgers finish their season with six games against the Giants, four against the Pirates, and three against the Padres.  AccuScore simulations have the Dodgers as heavy favorites in almost all of these games.  The Diamondbacks have a tougher schedule with four games against the Giants, six games against the Rockies, and four games against the Cardinals.  It would take a very disappointing run for the Dodgers combined with a quick turnaround by Arizona for the Diamondbacks to have any shot in this race.
