Boston took three of four games against Toronto over the weekend, while the Rays lost two of three to the Yankees. The Red Sox beat the Rays 3-0 on Monday, thanks to a strong start from Jon Lester, and tied the Rays in the standings in the AL East. Tampa Bay fought back in the next two games, reclaiming a two game lead, and improving their chances of winning the AL East to 70.5 percent in AccuScore simulations. The Rays and Red Sox don’t meet again in the regular season. The Red Sox play three more games against Toronto this weekend, four against Cleveland next week, and finish their season with three games against the Yankees. The Rays have an easier schedule ahead, with four games against the Twins, four games against the Orioles, and their final four games against the Tigers. While the AL East race is one of the closest races in the majors, the end result is kind of anti-climactic. Boston currently holds a seven game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the AL Wild Card race, which means that the loser of this division will still make the playoffs.
